There are always consequences to bad behavior, it is only a matter of time before sins will have a negative affect upon a persons life. Thankfully, if we know Jesus and have a repentant heart, forgiveness is waiting for us, Still we need to stop making excuses for people making bad choices. Our criminal justice system needs to change.
The people that make good choices shouldnt foot the bill for those who commit crimes. There needs to personal ramifications for crime beyond going to prison. Part of the penalty for every resulting in prison time should be the cost of their internment. Granted, not everyone will be able to pay it, but much like a collage loan, once they get out repayment should be required. This will cause people to think more before they make bad choices.
Secondly, prison should provide a person only what is minimally required by the law. I do not believe that a criminal should have comforts that many low income individuals do not even have. Do I believe that a person can be rehabilitated? Yes, but rather thats government rehabilitation programs, I believe that public sector programs should be used. The ones used should be based on the success rate of those going through the program not returning to prison. Religious programs would be equally considered.
Poor decisions should result in negative consequences for the person who made the poor choice, not negative consequences for the people of Montana.
